RPM Services in Medical Billing

RPM services, or Remote Patient Monitoring services, have become increasingly popular in medical billing in recent years. RPM allows healthcare providers to monitor patients' vital signs and health data remotely, often using wearable technology such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, and other medical devices. The data is then transmitted to the healthcare provider, who can use it to manage patients' care.

In terms of medical billing, RPM services can be billed to insurance companies under specific CPT codes. The most commonly used codes for RPM services in medical billing are:

  • 99457: Remote evaluation of recorded video and/or images submitted by an established patient, including interpretation and report, furnished to the patient/caregiver
  • 99458: Same as 99457, but for additional time spent beyond the initial 20 minutes

These codes cover the time and effort spent by the healthcare provider in reviewing the patient's health data and creating a report based on that data. Some insurance companies may also cover the cost of the remote monitoring equipment itself.

It's important to note that not all insurance companies cover RPM billing services, and the requirements for reimbursement can vary. Healthcare providers should check with the patient's insurance company to determine coverage and billing requirements before providing RPM services.
